Toncoin is the native network cryptocurrency of the TON decentralized ecosystem. TON aims to enable fast payment settlement, easy-to-use decentralized applications, small fees, and other positives offered by its layer-1 independent blockchain. TON’s layer-1 operates on its blockchain and not atop another independent blockchain, such as the Ethereum Network.

Toncoin was launched in 2018 originally as a Telegram Open Network. It had its early utilities associated with the Telegram social network platform. After early issues with an SEC claim against TON that ultimately favored the SEC, TON rebranded in 2020. A group of new software developers who named themselves NewTON changed aspects of the coin and ecosystem, including the name. As rebranding commenced, Telegram Open Network was changed to ‘The Open Network’.

Toncoin is the network currency for the TON network and is used in staking within the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, which protects the TON blockchain. Toncoin is known by its token ticker $TON. The current price of Toncoin is updated and available in real-time on Binance.

TON is used in staking on the TON decentralized network. TON can be staked in the network consensus mechanism protocol. In TON’s PoS consensus algorithm, validators are chosen based on their stake in the network. The more tokens a validator holds, the higher their chances of being selected as a validator. Validators are responsible for creating new blocks and verifying transactions on the network. The chosen validators must reach a consensus on which block to add to the blockchain, which is achieved through the BFT algorithm. TON’s validation process includes several checks and balances to ensure the integrity of the network.

Toncoin was a development of the Telegram social network platform in 2018. The coin was rebranded to The Open Network after losing a battle with the SEC, which filed a suit against the company for failing to register its prior sale of $1.7 billion worth of tokens.

The total supply of Toncoin is 5,047,558,528 and the circulating supply stands at 3,431,892,088 at the time of writing.
